For the most part, the oil industry was created by the invention of the internal combustion engine. Oil and its by-products of plastic can be derived from alternatives such as hemp seeds. Jatropha is a plant that has been considered as an alternative for jet fuel, derived from its seeds, that meets the special requirements that jet fuel demands. The myth surrounding Jatropha is that it wouldn’t take up valued agricultural land that could be used for food production because of its ability to grow in arid regions with sandy soil; but, Jatropha plants grown under these conditions do not produce many seeds from which the bio-fuel is derived. So, in order to produce large amounts of seeds, it would need to be grown under the same conditions that are available to food crops. Like anything, there are going to be challenges in creating alternatives.
