In the late 80’s I was subscribed to several popular art magazines at the time and I noticed most of the stories featured artists with art degrees and I got it in my head that in order to break into the art gallery scene I needed an art degree. What a delusion and a folly. Most colleges emphasize a “diverse” education and are geared towards those who don’t really know what they want to major in. So, really, instead of focusing on art, which is the reason I went in the first place, I ended up studying rocks and schist in geology and struggling through college algebra, which I have never used since. I never learned to draw and paint in college. I would have been better off studying on my own. What matters is the work. All else is illusion.
