Mainly, desperation has lead me into scams, such as affiliate marketing, even to the point of buying a domain and flooding it with bot traffic from China. I have also accepted a lot of really shitty jobs because of desperation. The bottom line, which I think you addressed, is that desperation leads to poor decisions. Sometimes you need a bear hug; sometimes, though, you just need a bare hug.
