The implications of FOSTA go far beyond ‘personals’, or any sexually oriented ads. It opens the door for web site owners to be held accountable for any type of illegal activity that uses their web site to enable their transactions. If someone fences stolen cars, motorcycles, boats, trailers, RV’s, photography and electronic equipment through Craigslist, will they take down the ‘For Sale’ section? If someone buys a used car through Craigslist and then kills someone while being intoxicated behind the wheel, will they be sued for allowing the used car sale to take place? Craigslist has also completely removed the section for legal therapeutic massage practitioners to advertise their services. It is not like a masseuse has an unlimited list of clientel and can’t figure out what to do with the millions they are raking in on their own. This is plain and simply bad legislation that places the responsibility of Law Enforcement on the shoulders of web site owners. It is also another prime example of why net neutrality is so important.
