While I admire, respect and wish to embrace your philosophy, it often isn’t so simple and easy. Reality often slaps one in the face with a continuous stream of impending bills. The electric company and the landlord aren’t so willing to be your benefactor, so that you may pursue your creative ambitions. There are other artist stories that help to promote the myth of the “starving artist”. Van Gogh had the support of his brother, but, certainly wasn’t making a living from his art and only sold two paintings while he was alive. His friend, Gauguin certainly wasn’t rich from his art, either. Amedeo Modigliani seen little success as an artist during his lifetime, although he also battled alcoholism and other demons. This being said, my favorite quote is from Michelangelo~ “The promises of this world are, for the most part, vain phantoms; and to confide in one’s self, and become something of worth and value is the best and safest course.”
